Conosciamo meglio Puck Hoogers, banda olandese classe 2003, arrivata quest’anno alla Clai Imola dopo la stagione vissuta in Portogallo indossando la prestigiosa maglia del Porto, club con il quale ha giocato da protagonista l’ultima edizione della Champions League di volley.
Che tipo di persona sei, Puck? Come ti descriveresti?
“Direi che sono una persona appassionata, sia dentro che fuori dal campo. Mi piace imparare e mettermi alla prova. Direi anche che sono un tipo molto solidale, soprattutto con le mie compagne di squadra. La chimica del gruppo è molto importante nella pallavolo”.
Sei soddisfatta della scelta che hai fatto la scorsa estate? Che impressione ti ha fatto finora la pallavolo italiana?
“Assolutamente. Venire in Italia è stata una decisione fantastica. Il livello di gioco nella serie A2 è molto competitivo. E i tifosi amano questo sport con tutto il cuore”.
Che tipo di ambiente e squadra hai trovato alla Clai?
“Lo staff e le altre giocatrici mi hanno accolta a braccia aperte. Tutti lavorano duramente e si supportano a vicenda. È un ambiente professionale ma anche molto caloroso. Mi sono sentita parte della squadra fin dal primo allenamento”.
Cosa ti manca di più del tuo Paese, i Paesi Bassi?
“Ovviamente mi manca la mia famiglia. E forse anche un po’ il cibo olandese… Ma soprattutto le piccole abitudini quotidiane, come andare in bici ovunque, parlare la mia lingua e passare il tempo con i miei cari”.
E cosa ti ha colpito di più dell’Italia in questo primo periodo?
“Le persone e il cibo. Gli italiani hanno una cultura molto forte e un grande orgoglio per le loro tradizioni, ed è davvero meraviglioso viverlo. E le case e le strade…qui è tutto così bello!”.
Come va con la nostra lingua? Hai imparato qualche parola in italiano?
“Sta andando abbastanza bene! Ho imparato alcune frasi e parole, soprattutto legate alla pallavolo, e sto cercando di usare sempre di più l’italiano ogni giorno. Mi piacciono molto le parole “andiamo” e “forza”…”.
Come trascorri il (poco) tempo libero che hai qui a Imola?
“Quando non ci alleniamo o non giochiamo, mi piace esplorare un po’ la città, prendere un caffè, visitare i mercati e passeggiare. A volte semplicemente mi rilasso o faccio una videochiamata a casa o al mio ragazzo”.
C’è un oggetto in particolare che porti sempre con te, ovunque tu vada?
“Sì, ho una collana che mia mamma mi ha regalato qualche anno fa, e non la tolgo mai. Mi ricorda casa, è il mio portafortuna”
Hai qualche rito o abitudine che ripeti prima di ogni partita?
“Assolutamente sì. Ascoltiamo sempre la nostra playlist del pre-partita mentre ci cambiamo. Mi aiuta a entrare nel giusto stato mentale. E poi mi prendo qualche minuto per visualizzare la partita e il piano di gioco”.
Qual è la tua vacanza ideale? Se potessi partire ora, dove andresti?
“In un posto tranquillo e caldo, vicino all’oceano. Qualsiasi luogo in cui ci siano sole e buon cibo è perfetto. La prossima vacanza sarà un viaggio in Giamaica con il mio ragazzo, quindi sono molto entusiasta”.
Se dovessi scegliere una parola che ti rappresenta meglio… quale sarebbe?
“Credo “solidale”. La vita di un’atleta è piena di alti e bassi e ogni compagna di squadra vive tutto questo, quindi è importante esserci l’una per l’altra. Credo nel mostrarsi ogni giorno disponibili e cercare di migliorare sempre”.
Let’s get to know Puck Hoogers better, a Dutch player born in 2003, who joined Clai Imola this year after a season in Portugal, where she wore the prestigious jersey of Porto – a club with which she played a key role in the most recent edition of the Volleyball Champions League
What kind of person are you, Puck? How would you describe yourself?
“I’d say I’m a passionate person, both on and off the court. I like learning and challenging myself. Also I would say supportive, especially with my teammates. Team chemistry is very important in volleyball”.
Are you satisfied with the choice you made last summer? What impression has Italian volleyball made on you so far?
“Absolutely. Coming to Italy was an amazing decision. The level of play here in the A2 league is very competitive. And the fans love the sport with all their heart”.
What kind of environment and team did you find at Clai?
“The staff and players welcomed me with open arms. Everyone works hard and supports each other. It’s a professional environment but also very warm. I’ve felt like a part of the team since the very first training session”.
What do you miss most about your home country, the Netherlands?
“Of course, I miss my family. And maybe the Dutch food a little… But mainly it’s the small, familiar things: biking everywhere, the language, and spending time with my loved ones”.
And what has impressed you the most about Italy during this initial period?
“The people and the food. Italians have such a strong culture and pride in their traditions, and it’s really amazing to experience. And the houses and streets here. Everything looks like beautiful”.
How’s it going with our language? Have you learned any Italian words?
“It’s going okay! I learned a couple of phrases and words. especially volleyball terms and I’m trying to use Italian more every day. I like the words “andiamo” and “forza” a lot”.
How do you spend the (little) free time you have here in Imola?
“When we’re not training or playing, I like to explore the town a bit, grab a coffee, visit markets and walk around. Sometimes I just relax or call home and my boyfriend”.
Is there a particular object you always carry with you, wherever you go?
“Yes, I have a necklace that my mom gave me a couple year ago, and I never take it off. It reminds me of home. It’s my good luck charm”.
Do you have any rituals or habits you repeat before every match?
“Definitely. We always listen to our pre game playlist while we get changed. It helps me get into the right mindset. I also take a few minutes to visualize the game and the game plan”.
What’s your ideal vacation? If you could leave right now, where would you go?
“Somewhere peaceful and warm, near the ocean. Anywhere with sunshine and good food is perfect. My next vacation will be a trip to Jamaica with my boyfriend…so thats exciting”.
If you had to choose one word that best represents you… what would it be?
“I think it’s supportive. Life as an athlete is full of ups and downs and every teammate experiences that so it’s important to be there for one another. I believe in showing up every day and trying to be better every day”.
